As part of its programme of highway maintenance works, East Riding of Yorkshire Council is carrying out carriageway improvement works along part of Market Place and Bull Ring Roundabout, Hornsea.
The works began on Monday, 22 October, and will take approximately 15 days to complete, weather permitting.
The scheme will consist of removing the existing carriageway to various depths as required and reconstructing back to the existing road level, and localised repairs to the footways along the route. In addition, the block paving within the roundabout will be replaced with decorative bespoke blocks displaying a shoal of fish.
The council’s contractor will be Britcon (UK) Ltd. The works will include both day (9.30am-3.30pm) and evening (6pm-11pm) shifts, which will avoid the need to close the main shopping area during the day.
The works will be split into three main phases:-
Phase One – Localised footpath works (Weekdays 9.30am-3.30pm under temporary localised traffic management)
Phase Two – Block paving and carriageway works on the Bull Ring Roundabout (Weekdays and one Sunday between 6pm and 11pm)
Phase Three – Carriageway works between Newbegin junction and Bull Ring Roundabout (Weekdays 6pm-11pm)
Phases Two and Three will be carried out under temporary road closures with local signed diversions routes through Hornsea. During Phase Two, HGVs will have to divert via the B1242 Skipsea, B1249 Beeford and A165 Leven Roundabout.
The works will alternate between Phases Two and Three, but no works will be carried out simultaneously on both phases. Bus services will be diverted via Eastgate during Phase Three, but will be escorted through the works during Phase Two.
Businesses and residents on Market Place/ Bull Ring Roundabout will be notified of proposed working dates in advance of the works. Access will only be permitted within the works areas to residents and business owners during the evening works, but vehicles will need to be left off the carriageway to allow access for the contractor. All routes within the shopping area itself will be open as usual during daytime hours.
An East Riding of Yorkshire Council spokesperson said: “We apologise in advance to local residents and road users for any inconvenience caused by these works. We would like to reassure all road users that they will benefit from a greatly improved road surface after completion, together with the improvements to the roundabout, which will look considerably more fitting for its coastal location.”
