Hornsea Art Festival

The first ever Hornsea Art Festival proved to be a resounding success. Seventeen artists from the Midlands and the north of England made the trip to Hornsea to host workshops on a variety of subjects including portraits in oils, landscapes in acrylics, charcoal, pastel, wire sculpture and collagraph printing. All the workshops were well supported and catered for a whole range of abilities from experienced artists to absolute beginners. Esther Cawley hosted a drop-in drawing workshop at the Town Hall which saw many young children get involved and one of the highlights was the Hornsea Four Hour Challenge at the Mere led by Tom Voyce, Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year, when over 20 artists painted pictures ‘en plein air’. The completed works were judged by Tom and fellow artist Heather Burton and prizes were kindly donated by Larry Malkin, Chairman of East Riding Artists, and Great Art. The results were as follows: 1. Martin Piper; 2. Mimi Claughton; 3. Larry Malkin; 4. Claude Hargreaves. Gazebo kindly supplied by hey.smilefoundation. Larry also led a trip down to Spurn Point where he conducted a sketching/painting workshop. Our thanks go to all the participating artists which included well-known national figures such as Fraser Scarfe, Paul Talbot-Greaves, Rob Wareing, Jake Attree, Andrew Farmer and Graham Berry as well as some of our outstanding local artists such as Heather Burton, Cath Inglis, Geoff Hewitt, Lynne Porter, Pam Williams, Rachel Crawford , Ed Rust and Wendy Tate.

Thanks too to all involved at the Town Hall, the Catholic Church Hall and the Indoor Bowls Club for their help and support and to the team of volunteers from Hornsea Art Society who helped with hospitality …and thanks of course to all participants, some of whom travelled from as far away as Scunthorpe and Pontefract. All participants in the workshops are invited to submit paintings for the exhibition at the Seagull Gallery, Hornsea Indoor Bowls Club, in October, entitled ‘Made in Hornsea’. Come along and see the fruits of all their labours and in the meantime, here are some images from the festival.
