The Hornsea Pottery Heritage Trail, which was the idea of Councillor and former pottery employee John Whittle, and was developed as a project by Hornsea Area Regeneration Partnership, has finally started to appear on our High Street, provoking a positive response from residents and businesses.

The project has grown much bigger and more expensive than John had originally envisaged with the bill so far running to £122,000 for Phase One. These funds were raised through grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund, The Arts Council, the 4Good Fund, St Hughs and ERYC.

Local artist Adele Howitt was chosen to design the trail which she did last year after consultations with several ex-pottery employees and the help of students from Hornsea School. There were problems with some materials costing more than had been anticipated and so some of the designs had to be adjusted, which caused the project to be delayed. So far a floor piece in front of the museum, repeater signs and the shoal design for the Market Place roundabout have been installed. Shortly, the pocket garden in Newbegin is due to be equipped with an information board for the trail and a website, leaflets and teachers packs are also being designed. In January a bench with the ‘Elegance’ design will also be installed in Newbegin and the final part of Phase One will be the ‘Murmuration’ design planned for the roundabout on Southgate. This is currently being amended to comply with safety concerns of the ERYC Highways department.

Further additions are planned for Phase Two of the project which is expected to take the total spending up to £250,000. Early next year a launch event will take place in the Town Hall.
